The Solar Impulse Foundation released its Solutions Guide for Cities at COP27. The Guide compiles clean and profitable solutions and implementation studies that have been vetted by Solar Impulse Foundation’s team of experts. The guide is designed to help and inspire urban centers to quickly build and implement effective decarbonization programs.
WindowSkin is the first solution featured in Challenge 2.3.2: Adopting external insulation and passive heating & cooling technologies. pp 75 – 76.
Challenge 2.3.2 looks toward passive solutions that improve the insulation of windows, walls, and roofs. Window replacement faces numerous obstacles, including aesthetic and financial. The guide presents PolarSkins TM, implemented as part of a study by Taitem Engineering, PC in Ithaca, NY in 2019. PolarSkins were installed on 76% of the window glazing area in a 100+-year-old building with original single-pane and exterior storm windows. With this installation, the building saw a 12% annual reduction in natural gas consumption. In 2021, WexEnergy released its redesigned PolarSkin model. Using Intertek-validated data, we estimate Taitem’s savings would have reached 17%.
