With the holidays right around the corner, you might be tempted to pick up another gift card for that hard-to-shop-for-friend or family member. WexEnergy’s President and CEO, Rachel Rosen, has shared her list of Top 5 Green Gifts.

  1. LED Light or Lighting Fixtures– For anyone who hasn’t switched, there are a tremendous variety of lighting colors and types of bulbs available at an affordable price. Give LED flashlights to keep in the car or for power outages at home.
  2. Energy Star® Appliances– Looking to replace home appliances? You should consider upgrading to appliances that are Energy Star rated. As a gift, give the gift of a subscription to Consumer Reports to someone who is buying new appliances this year.
  3. Smart Thermostat– A good thermostat can lower your energy costs this year. Lowering your thermostat by one degree in winter (raising it by one degree in summer) saves real dollars. Start with a one-degree change and see if you’re comfortable. You will be surprised at the savings you will be on your monthly energy bill! Buy someone you know a smart thermostat and daily temperature control is completely automated! Or put your handyman skills to use and help them replace their old ones.
  4. Compost Bin– Buy someone a compost bin if they have the outdoor space for composting and have expressed interest in composting. Alternatively, purchase them a subscription to a local composting service. We use Impact Earth in Rochester.
  5. Laundry Detergent Sheets– Traditional laundry detergent is a huge waste of water, plastic, as well as fuel for transport. Buy that person on your list a one-year subscription to laundry detergent sheets. We use Earthwash by Cleanomic laundry sheets.

These great eco-friendly gadgets and products are great additions to anyone’s energy-saving arsenal. These are great gifts at any time of year because it’s always a thoughtful gesture when you help your family and friends save energy and money.
