Award includes entry into ACRE incubator at Urban Future lab and $50,000 cash prize

ROCHESTER, NY – WexEnergy, a Rochester-based start-up developing energy saving window retrofit solutions for residential, institutional, and commercial buildings, was awarded The New York Community Trust Impact Prize on April 24 at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering’s Urban Future Prize Competition.

The award includes a $50,000 cash prize and membership in the clean energy-focused ACRE incubator, located at NYU Tandon’s Urban Future Lab in Brooklyn, New York. ACRE is NYC’s premier cleantech incubator and is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).  The event and prizes were funded by The New York Community Trust.

Rachel N. Rosen, CEO and co-founder of WexEnergy shared “WexEnergy is grateful to all our Upstate New York partners who were first to provide support to WexEnergy as we pursued our goal of improving building envelope energy efficiency and fighting climate change.”

WexEnergy is currently participating in the DeltaClimeVT Energy2020  business accelerator and looks forward to joining the ACRE business incubator in Brooklyn, NY.  WexEnergy is headquartered at NextCorps in downtown Rochester, NY where the company is completing its 18-month long engagement in the first cohort of the Hardware Scaleup Program. Dr. Ron Wexler, CTO and Founder of WexEnergy, credits Hardware Scaleup in guiding WexEnergy through the Department of Defense Manufacturing Readiness Levels. He says, “WexEnergy started out at an MRL of 4 and expects to reach MRL 8 very soon.  This accomplishment speaks to the quality of manufacturing available in Upstate NY and the strong support of the Hardware Scaleup program.”  WexEnergy is also a Startup Partner of the SyracuseCOE and a virtual member of the  CleanTech Center, a NYSERDA incubator.

WexEnergy is being recognized for the potential impact of its WindowSkin® product platform  in reducing carbon emissions across the USA.  “WindowSkins have the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 3.5 gigatonnes over the next decade,” Dr. Wexler estimates.  WindowSkin’s impact is compounded by its affordability, making it an ideal solution for economically uncertain times. WindowSkins provide up to 75% of the insulation improvement for less than 15% of the cost of window replacements. At this time, WindowSkins are being sold into the property management and educational building markets.
