July’s easy zero to low cost ways to be environmentally conscious

Water conservation is important all year long, but especially during the hot summer months. We drink more water and use more water in pools, to water the lawn, and to wash our cars in the summer. Use the zero to low cost tips below to be more conscious of your property’s water usage and waste less water in and out of your building or business.

Outside the Building:

  • Instruct your property maintenance staff to water the lawn in the morning and evening when it’s cooler outside so water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.
  • Collect the rainwater that streams out of your gutter spout in a rain barrel and use this to water the landscaping on your property. This also prevents water from collecting in one spot on the ground and creating a muddy area on your property.
  • Don’t let water go to waste when kids play in the sprinkler! Set the sprinkler up strategically on your property so that it waters areas that need watering anyway. Even better, install a drip irrigation system for landscaping to water plants directly and waste even less water.

Inside the Building:

  • To make sure you are not wasting water inside your buildings, have property maintenance staff check for leaks in your plumbing using the toilet test. In order to administer the toilet test put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet in each toilet tank. If the color shows in the toilet bowl, your tank is leaking and could be wasting up to 100 gallons of water a day.
  • Encourage residents and employees to purchase and use a reusable water bottle rather than using a disposable water bottle. Even better, give your residents and employees free reusable water bottles as part of a green initiative. It takes 3 to 5 times as much water to produce a disposable water bottle than the water you drink from one use.
  • Record the water usage for your property each month and post it in the lobby. Challenge your residents and employees to decrease that water usage number each month.
